Is Using Diet Pills For Weight Loss Safe?

By Miriam Berkowitz

With obesity rates being at an all time high, diet pills promising fast and easy weight loss have become a multi-billion dollar industry.

Some people have success with diet pills while others may not. Most people who use diet pills as part of a weight loss plan will see results. Even though, they may produce positive results, because of possible long term health risks and side effects diet pills should not be used for extended periods of time.

There are a number of different types of diet pills for weight loss. The most commonly used ones are appetite suppressants and fat blockers.

The job of appetite suppressants is to make the body believe that it is full. It does this by releasing the hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine. These two hormones make the body feel as though it is satisfied and no longer hungry.

By reducing feelings of hunger they help to control overeating and snacking.

While appetites suppressants can be effective, they may also have side effects such as feeling jittery, stomach cramps, headaches, fatigue and more.

Diet pills are not designed to be used for extended periods of time. They are most effective when combined with exercise and healthy eating.

While appetite suppressants control hunger, fat blockers work to keep fat from being absorbed by the body. Instead excess fat is eliminated as wastes. Fat blockers are also designed to increase metabolism and energy.

Fat blockers can be an instrumental part of a weight loss plan but they can have side effects such as oily loose bowel movements, nausea and stomach cramping.

One of the drawbacks to diet pills is that once you stop taking the pills you have a very good chance of gaining the weight back. To get the most benefit from weight loss supplements, combine them with a low calorie diet and an exercise plan that includes both aerobic and strength training workouts.

When you have established and successfully stuck with your new routine of eating healthy and exercising daily for a few months, you should stop taking the weight loss pills. At this point you should be able to keep the weight off without them.

You can obtain diet pills from various retail stores or from your doctor.

If purchasing over the counter supplements be sure to do your homework on the product. This includes checking the FDA for any health concerns related to the product or product recalls. Prior to starting any diet, it is best to speak with your doctor.
